Amish Country (Part 1)

This past weekend my wife Sarah and I decided to get away from our everyday lives and go live in a tree house in Amish Country. I had never been to Amish Country before, even with it being only about an hour and a half away, and my wife had only been there in her youth (because we are old people now).

Ohio has the largest population of Amish people in the entire world, followed closely by Pennsylvania, and although I still don't really get why someone would want to live their lives perpetually in 1695, I respect them for doing it. No Netflix though? Really?

So you may be asking "Why a tree house (you probably aren't)?" Why not?

We stayed in the "Whispering Pines" tree house in Berlin, Ohio and it was definitely the highlight of our trip.

Friday

We opted for the luxury of "Violet" the Pilot for the ride down, and after Sarah got out of work we were on our way. By the time we made it down to the tree house it was already dark, so outdoor pictures were out of the question on the limited capabilities of my phone camera. We obtained our key code from the owner and made our way inside.

We unloaded all of our groceries for the stay. The room had a microwave, stove, fridge and freezer, and a coffee maker. It also came with silverware and dishes (even though we brought our own). When we sat down on the couch we noticed a notebook. As we began to read it, we realized its purpose, it was a journal for the guests to write in about their stay. It also contained clues for an ongoing scavenger hunt. People were hiding money in crevices and leaving clues on how to find it. There was paper and coin currency scattered everywhere. After signing the money it was placed back in its proper location and upon leaving every guest left more for the future travelers to find.

The Notebook (not to be confused with the chick flick).
Can you spot the dollar?
After getting settled in we made dinner, which was a hodgepodge of sausage, potatoes, green peppers, and onions.

I guess you know who the picky one is. My drink is better though.

Saturday

In the morning we awoke to heavy snowfall, but that didn't slow us down. Today was the day we were heading into Amish Country. Good thing we had four wheel drive.

View through main window in the morning.
Main entrance and slippery stairs down to the forest floor.

Time for the Amish!
We put on our warmest clothes and hopped in the Pilot. Our first destination was breakfast at the Homestead Restaurant, and boy were we hungry.

To be continued...
