Marblehead Mystery Unsolved...Again

I recently received a comment on a post I made back here about the old (supposed) railway bridge we found by the Marblehead Lighthouse. The comment led me to a very interesting read about the Lakeside and Marblehead Railroad. On page 41 of this PDF the author placed a map that shows the newly built Toledo, Port Clinton and Lakeside Interurban route. Well if you take a look on that page you will notice that the route runs west of Main Street, which is in the same location it is today. The path that we found in the woods is directly to the east of the road. This was hard to tell on the original map I had located due to it being zoomed out so far.

So what do I think it is? I honestly have no idea, but if I did have to guess I would say it was possibly a temporary way to bring stuff to the lighthouse grounds from the water, since it does lead to the lake. But why is it so far from the lighthouse? It seems to me if this is the case they would have built a ramp right on the grounds. On the You Know You're From Marblehead When... Facebook page someone mentioned that in a book they interviewed someone that worked at the quarries. He said that they made a makeshift railroad to transport limestone to that part of the island. Maybe this is that track. I will have to keep looking into this and hopefully someday I will get a definite answer.

See, when I show you graphs about lake erosion, maps, and old pictures you people will believe anything I post. Yes folks, even I can make mistakes ;)

Thanks for reading.
